Welcome to Birkenhead Park – A Different Kind of Outdoor Gym

Located in Birkenhead, Wirral (Merseyside), Birkenhead Park is one of the UK’s most historic and beautiful green spaces, but its outdoor gym setup is definitely not your standard calisthenics park.

Instead of a single designated training area, the equipment is spread out around the lower lake, turning your session into a mix of calisthenics, exploration, and cardio. While the layout can feel a bit awkward at first, with the right mindset (and a mental map), it can actually lead to a surprisingly creative workout.

What Equipment Is Available?

The fitness equipment here is a mix of basic outdoor machines and more functional calisthenics setups. Here’s what you’ll find:

Functional Equipment (spaced apart):

  • Ab Bench – Solid for sit-ups and core-focused sets.
  • Dip Station / Australian Row Bars – Great for triceps, chest and back.
  • Pull-Up Station – Unique design with two parallel handles (not a straight bar). Three sets of bars available at this location.

Cardio & Light Resistance Machines (dotted around the lake):

  • Cardio Bike
  • Shoulder Press
  • Rotating Mobility Wheel

These machines aren’t particularly useful for strength training, but they can still serve as a warm-up or low-intensity movement option.

Workout Potential – What Can You Actually Do Here?

This isn’t a place where you’ll bang out all your sets in one corner of the park. Instead, you’re looking at a more circuit-based, movement-rich workout. Here's how you can make it work:

Upper Body Strength

✔ Pull-ups (using the handle-style bars)
✔ Dips (station is solid and well-placed)
✔ Australian rows for horizontal pulling
✔ Sit-ups on the ab bench

Cardio / Movement Integration

✔ Short sprints or jogs between equipment (some stations are 5+ minutes apart!)
✔ Use the path around the lake as a built-in running track
✔ High-rep bodyweight circuits with active recovery in between

Full-Body Circuit Example:

  1. Pull-ups at the station near the path entrance
  2. Sprint 2 mins to ab bench – 15 sit-ups
  3. Walk/jog to dip station – 12 dips
  4. Continue around lake – optional bike/spin
  5. Repeat circuit 3–4 rounds

What’s It Like Training Here?

Birkenhead Park is massive and beautiful, full of wildlife, lakeside views and greenery. It’s easy to see why it’s busy on sunny days and weekends, it’s a great place to just be outdoors.

That said, it’s worth noting:

  • The gym setup is scattered – expect to walk/jog between equipment.
  • The pull-up bars aren’t standard – not ideal for muscle-ups or bar transitions.
  • It’s scenic, peaceful and motivating, especially in the mornings.
  • It took a while to find all the stations – some are hidden from plain view.
  • Great for cardio lovers – you’ll get steps in between every set!

The location itself is in a nicer part of town, but Birkenhead overall can be rough in areas, just stay alert and aim to train during daylight hours.

Who Is This Gym For?

This park is best for:

  • Runners and hybrid athletes who like mixing cardio with bodyweight work
  • People who enjoy training in nature and don’t mind moving between sets
  • Locals looking for a peaceful spot for basic strength training

It’s probably not for:

  • Advanced calisthenics athletes who need rings, straight bars, or statics
  • Anyone short on time – you’ll need to walk a fair bit between sets
